Maine in the War of 1812

Trading, Smuggling, Privateering & British Assaults in summer 1814

200th Anniversary of the Capture of Eastport, Maine by the British

Event Details

Event Description

One day, folks around Passamaquoddy Bay noticed the harbor filled with white - the sails of a British fleet that arrived to make demand of the immediate surrender of Fort Sullivan at Eastport, Maine, on Moose Island. Townspeople convinced the reluctant Fort Sullivan commander Putnam to surrender. Thus was the beginning of an occupation that was to last nearly four years.
